    Adaptive Street Lighting Predictive Control

    Get PDF
Abstract In this paper an implementation of a smart predictive monitoring and adaptive control system for the public lighting have been carried out. The vehicular traffic flow acquired using a smart camera has been analyzed and several predictive methods have been studied. Then, a control strategy based on the given traffic forecasts and on the dynamical street class downgrade allowed by the law, has been implemented. Experimental results provided by a real life testbed showed that the proposed strategy has high potential energy savings without affecting safety

A computational study of the structure and function of human Zrt and Irt-like proteins metal transporters: An elevator-type transport mechanism predicted by AlphaFold2

The ZIP (Zrt and Irt-like proteins) protein family includes transporters responsible for the translocation of zinc and other transition metals, such as iron and cadmium, between the extracellular space (or the lumen of organelles) and the cytoplasm. This protein family is present at all the phylogenetic levels, including bacteria, fungi, plants, insects, and mammals. ZIP proteins are responsible for the homeostasis of metals essential for the cell physiology. The human ZIP family consists of fourteen members (hZIP1-hZIP14), divided into four subfamilies: LIV-1, containing nine hZIPs, the subfamily I, with only one member, the subfamily II, which includes three members and the subfamily gufA, which has only one member. Apart from the extracellular domain, typical of the LIV-1 subfamily, the highly conserved transmembrane domain, containing the binuclear metal center (BMC), and the histidine-rich intracellular loop are the common features characterizing the ZIP family. Here is presented a computational study of the structure and function of human ZIP family members. Multiple sequence alignment and structural models were obtained for the 14 hZIP members. Moreover, a full-length three-dimensional model of the hZIP4-homodimer complex was also produced. Different conformations of the representative hZIP transporters were obtained through a modified version of the AlphaFold2 algorithm. The inward and outward-facing conformations obtained suggest that the hZIP proteins function with an "elevator-type " mechanism

General lighting in offices building: Techno-economic considerations on the fluorescent tubes replacement with LED tubes

    Get PDF
The use of LED light sources is nowadays an attractive solution because it can easily lead to lower operating costs of artificial lighting. In the last years, the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LED tubes for lighting of workplaces have been frequently proposed. The aim of the Authors is to analyze, from techno-economic's point of view, the fluorescent tubes replacement of a typical office building with LED tubes. Using the evaluation of the Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator has been possible to point out that the replacement of the fluorescent tubes allows a reduction in energy consumption for lighting higher than 50% with an obvious reduction in the annual operating cost. For the lamps replacement, in the case study have been estimated a simple payback time of less than 5 years. The methodological approach used by the Authors, although based on a case study, can be extended to numerous office buildings because the analyzed configurations (use and dimension of the rooms, type and features of the luminaires) can be considered significantly representative of this type of buildings. The choice of the LED sources that are suitable for the fluorescent lamps replacement must be preceded by a careful lighting analysis in order to ensure the compliance with the standards requirements

Thermal analysis of the building envelope of lightweight temporary housing

    Get PDF
In the last few years, to meet the need of build efficient homes in a short time and with maximum constructive simplification, lightweight prefabricated building systems have proved to be particularly suitable, especially in geographical areas which must deal with emergency situations (i.e., temporary housing). In this paper the winter and summer thermal performance of a building prototype, realised with modular steel framed elements, have been studied, in both winter and summer conditions. Special attention has been paid to the optimisation of the dynamic thermal performance of the multi-layered envelope structures. The dynamic thermal behaviour of the outer wall, analysed and discussed in details in the paper, shows that it is possible to improve the performance of lightweight walls by using an optimised stratigraphy characterised by an opportune sequence of resistive and capacitive layers. The influence of inner structures (partitions, floor and roof) on the building thermal behaviour has also analyzed trough the introduction of room performance indices appropriately defined. The results of the study have been discussed with special reference to the requirements fixed by the Energy Performance Buildings European Directive (EPBDs) and the resulting implementation in Italian Legislation

Fringe-projection profilometry for recovering 2.5D shape of ancient coins

The relief of form is undoubtedly one of the most topical topics in the field of cultural heritage. Physical access to historic and artistic manufactures can be limited by a lot of factors. For example, the access to the collection of the ancient coins is difficult, especially for students. Indeed, for coins digital archive of high-quality three-dimensional model and remote fruition is of great interest. The use of projected fringes for the measurement of surface profile is a well-developed technique. In this paper, we present a surface profile measurement system for small objects of cultural heritage where it is important not only to detect the shape with good accuracy but also to capture and archive the signs due to ageing. The illustrated equipment is simple, reliable, and cheap. Furthermore, some examples of acquisitions are presented to demonstrate the potentiality of the proposed scheme for recovering 2.5D shape of cultural heritage objects.</p

A Distributed Web-Based System for Temporal and Spatial Power Quality Analysis

    Get PDF
A distributed web-based system for temporal and spatial power quality analysis has been realized and tested. Connecting by internet local instruments able to perform high accuracy measurements in real time, the Power Quality information, locally measured, can be sent to a remote central server which aim is to plot them and stored the data for future analysis. The remote instruments have been realized, tested and placed in two Italian cities, Palermo and Rome, where actually work while the server works in Rome. The web application allows to select the single instrument and to show its stored PQ information

A simplified 3 –bits discrete pure linear analog preprocessing folding ADC architecture

    No full text
A simplified architecture of subranging pure linear folding ADC is proposed. The device is based on the folding idea to eliminate the DAC, the summing node and the amplifier, fundamental elements of the classical architecture, replacing them by means of an analogical signal preprocessing parallel structure named “channels”. The presented circuit in addition to the advantage of a reduction of total conversion time than a classical subranging ADC, so approaching ADC flashes, is very simple and easy to build. An accurate simulation of the single channels and of the whole structure validate the idea. A first discrete circuit it has been realized and tested
